Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti)

Humboldt penguins grow to be 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh 10 to 11 pounds. In the wild, they can live 15 to 20 years and in captivity they can live up to 30 years. They have two layers of feathers, on is for keeping in heat and the other is waterproof and flat, preening their feathers keeps then I perfect condition. Molting season is during January to September and takes around 10 days to finish molting. Like most penguins they have webbed feet with claws for climbing over rocks and they have a black beak. Many penguins can drink salt water because of their supraorbital gland filters the salt and removes it through the penguin’s nose. With excellent eyesight, on land and water, they can reach 20 miles per hour when they swim. Scientist are concerned about the Humboldt penguin because they a vulnerable to soon becoming extinct.
Humboldt penguins live near the coast of Chile and Peru spending most of their life at sea only coming to breed on the shore forming large colonies.
Humbolt penguins look for fish such as anchovies and sardines for dinner. When searching for a delicious dinner they go in groups and do not go that deep looking for prey. When close to the prey they swim around the fish round and round then when it does not expects it, it attacks it from the side.
